Alumnae Theatre Company announces 2012/13 season

Amid all the recent posts about February, the call for New Ideas Festival scripts, and audition notice for The Drowning Girls, I realized that Alumnae’s full season had not yet been formally announced on this blog.  So here it is.

Alumnae Theatre Company proudly announces its 2012/13 season – we have many milestones and anniversaries to celebrate, starting Sept 21, with the  WORLD PREMIERE of Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore’s lovely time-shifting drama February, which she adapted from her acclaimed 2009 novel.   This season also includes two other Canadian works – The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson and Daniela Vlaskalic in November; and our Countdown to 100 play, James Reaney’s The Killdeer in April.  In between, there’s a classic Oscar Wilde comedy, A Woman of No Importance (January), and the 25th annual (yes – 25, can you believe it!) New Ideas Festival in March.

Alumnae Theatre Company turns 95 years young in February 2013, and this is also our 40th season in this historic former firehall.  It’s going to be a great year!

Audition notice for “The Drowning Girls” (Alumnae Theatre, Nov 16 – Dec 1)

Alumnae Theatre Company seeks three non-union female actors for the Canadian play “The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic which runs Nov 16 – Dec 1, 2012, directed by Taryn Jorgenson.    Auditions will take place between Sept 8-11.  This is a non-paying engagement.

THE DROWNING GIRLS

By Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, Daniela Vlaskalic

Directed by Taryn Jorgenson

PERFORMANCE DATES:  November 16 – December 1, 2012

The Drowning Girls is based on a true story about a murder case in England in the early 20th century.  George Joseph Smith had three lovely brides. In each case, Smith had all of the woman’s property signed over to him, purchased life insurance on her and then drowned her in the bathtub. The play is told from the perspective of the brides – Bessie, Alice and Margaret. Their narratives are woven together with very poetic language and rhythms, each telling their story from beyond the grave – their hopes and dreams of life and marriage, their choices and their regrets.

ROLES

Bessie – late 20’s/early 30’s   A posh, accomplished woman, vulnerable by her youth and distance from her family.

Alice – early-mid 20’s   A young, vibrant, passionate woman who abandoned her values for her criminal husband.

Margaret – mid-30’s to early 40’s.  A desperate, lonely spinster who had given up on love until the wrong man came along.

DIRECTORS STILL NEEDED FOR TWO SHOWS in Alumnae Theatre’s 2012/2013 Season

Missed the original deadline?  You can submit a proposal to direct either of these two plays:

“February” by Lisa Moore   (September 21 – October 6, 2012)

Based on her acclaimed novel of the same name, Lisa Moore’s play February is the story of Helen, a Newfoundlander whose husband, Cal, was killed in the Ocean Ranger Disaster in 1982. February is about moving forward, about never letting go and about doing the right thing. Its characters are vivid and wonderful and the story is as funny as it is sad. Alumnae Theatre’s production will be the Toronto premiere – a new version of the script, based on a workshop in March 2012.

“A Woman of No Importance” by Oscar Wilde (January 25 – February 9, 2013)

A classic Oscar Wilde comedy: England, late 1890’s – a man, a woman, and the child they had outside of marriage (oh, my!). Lord Illingworth has employed young Gerald as his new secretary. But when Gerald’s mother, Mrs. Arbuthnot, meets her son’s new boss they immediately recognize each other from their youthful days of indiscretion. Will Gerald learn his father’s true identity? What of Lord Illingworth? And how will Mrs. Arbuthnot live with the result?
