Staged reading of The Abortion Monologues – June 20

Hey all – After getting the go-ahead from marketing gal Tina McCulloch, I can now tell you about Alumnae’s upcoming reading/fundraising event: The Abortion Monologues:

The controversial play The Abortion Monologues arrives in Toronto on June 20th, 2010, in the lead up to the G8 and G20 summits.

The Abortion Monologues focuses on women who share the stories of their abortions and, in the process, reveal the details of their lives, families and relationships. This funny, uncompromising and thought-provoking play stands in counterpoint to reality where women seldom publicly discuss this common and difficult choice.

The Abortion Monologues premiered in Portland, Oregon, in April 2009 to a large audience, many of whom work as abortion providers in clinics throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. Vicki Saporta, CEO of the National Abortion Federation, said, “The Abortion Monologues gives a voice to the perspectives of real women who are all too often missing from the public debate. These powerful monologues have the potential to change the way people talk about abortion.” For more information about the play please visit

This premiere will serve as a benefit performance for two organizations at the forefront of women’s health: Planned Parenthood, entering its 50th anniversary year, and Choice in Health which, through its Debby Copes’ Access Fund, provides assistance to women who do not have access to health insurance.

Alumnae Theatre’s mandate is threefold: to produce works that offer strong roles for women; to produce works that are not often seen in Toronto; and to produce works that are written by Canadians. And whether it’s the mandate, or whether it’s the shows, or whether it’s because of our joyful, unadulterated tenacity, we’ve been doing it for so long that we’re closing what is our 90th consecutive season with this Toronto premiere of The Abortion Monologues by Canadian playwright Jane Cawthorne. We are delighted that Jane Cawthorne will be in attendance for the performance and talk-back session.

For interviews with Jane Cawthorne or with the show’s producers, Dinah Watts, PJ Hammond, Lynne Patterson or Tabitha Keast, please contact Alumnae Theatre’s Marketing Coordinator, Tina McCulloch, at 416-967-4416 or at

On a personal note, I had my audition for this reading last night – and I’m very excited at the prospect of participating in a performance of this amazing, funny, touching and thought-provoking script. Forget anything you’ve ever assumed about women facing this decision.

This is a one-night only reading: 8 pm on Sunday, June 20. Tickets are $20 – available at or by calling 416-364-4170.
