Hedda Gabler – first read-through

Wow – things are really picking up at Alumnae! Our first show not open yet and our second show going into rehearsals.

Sat in with director Jane Carnwath, assistant director Lynda Yearwood, producer Andy Fraser and the gang on the first read-through of Hedda Gabler, our November studio production, last night. Again – wow! Nice work all around – and we have several familiar faces among the cast:

Sochi Fried (Hedda) – who last appeared on the Alum stage in another Judith Thompson piece, Palace of the End, and also appeared in Alum member Catherine Frid’s Toronto Fringe play Dead Cat Bounce this summer; currently appearing in Richard III at Hart House

Jane Reynolds (Aunt Juliana) – Alum member

Ilene Cummings (Berthe) – Alum member

James Harbeck (Tesman)

Andrew Batten (Judge Brack) – previously seen at Alum in The Memory of Water and Lady Windermere’s Fan

Leslie McBay (Thea) – who was our Lizzie in Pride and Prejudice

Malcolm Taylor (Lovborg) – last seen at Alum in New Ideas a couple of years ago as the Prince in Asleep at the Wheel and also is currently appearing in Richard III at Hart House

Also present at the read were several of the Hedda Gabler dream team:  fabuloso SM Margot “Mom” Devlin, Andy’s assistant Rachel Gelderbloem, costume designer Margaret “The Costumator” Spence, sound designer/composer/choreographer Rick Jones and marketing/promotions director Tina McCulloch. Set designer Ed Rosing (who was busy with You Are Here last night) and lighting designer/master carpenter “Super Mike” Spence will be in attendance at the next read-through on Saturday.

Thanks to Andy for the ever-amazing homemade chocolate chip cookies, and to the Spences for the drive home.

This is going to be a very sexy Hedda Gabler, folks – much to “Mom’s” dismay.  And that’s all I have to say about that. 🙂
