Cabbagetown Theatre opened its tenth annual No Sweethearts Required (NSR) Valentines cabaret last Wednesday – and I had the great pleasure of seeing the show on Saturday night with a gang of friends I’d met while performing in the Slaw Festival a few years ago. This year’s NSR is dedicated to Lindsay Empringham, who performed the one-woman show Waxing Lyrical (written by Alum gal Brenda Somers and debuted at New Ideas in 2008) at NSR last year.
The program features several Alumnae and related folks: funny and charming MC Liam Doherty; Kat Leonard (who performed her hilarious ode to Johnny Depp, Jockstrap – to be featured in her Fringe musical A Depper Kind of Love); Patricia Delves directed Sarah St-Onge-Richards (who performed in Soledad at NIF last year) and Leeman Kessler (recently in The Real Inspector Hound) in four two-hander Shakespeare scenes (Romeo & Juliet, Twelfth Night, Pericles and Taming of the Shrew); and Rosemary Doyle’s play Another Date (which debuted at Alumnae in Write Now and NIF), directed by Pat McCarthy, featured actors Lynn Zeelenberg and Greg Corkum (both familiar faces at NIF). The V-Day script was polished by Rosemary and Danielle Capretti (The Queens) served as dance coach; actor Linzee Barclay will appear in the upcoming NIF play Two Weeks in Normandy.
The fabulous program runs from classical to burlesque (artist Dainty Smith closed the show with a playful, sexy number), and from hilarious to sexy to touching – there truly is something for everyone.
Shouts to the entire NSR gang – you all rocked!
You have one more chance to catch the fun: tonight at 8 p.m., upstairs at Whistler’s. Tix are $20 – for info and reservations call: 416-653-5870.
Back soon with a write-up on the Village Playhouse Valentines show Sweets & Treats (by back-up/guest blogger Tina McCulloch).
