From SYLVIA producer Ramona Baillie:
SYLVIA rehearsals have begun and it’s hard to keep a straight face as the hilarity never stops!
A. R. Gurney’s play is guaranteed to make you laugh, and laugh, and laugh and perhaps even shed a tear or two. Sarah Jessica Parker (yes, the Sex & The City girl) originated the role of Sylvia on Broadway, and Lea Russell will lend her talent to the role in Alumnae Theatre’s production.
SYLVIA gives us a glimpse into the lives of empty nesters Kate and Greg, who’ve moved to New York from the suburbs now that their children are in college. Kate’s career as an inner-city English teacher has taken off and the couple enjoy a busy social life. However, Greg is losing interest in his stockbroker job and is suffering a mid-life crisis. This leads him to bring home a stray he finds in the park. Sylvia, a cross between a lab and a poodle, moves in and begins to move Kate out. “Give a dog a woman’s name and you’ll begin to think of it as a woman,” writes Gurney, and Greg does. Sylvia infringes on Greg and Kate’s relationship, very effectively becoming the third party in their marriage.
SYLVIA’s director is the very accomplished and innovative Maria Popoff. After a grueling audition process we can truly boast of an amazing 1st class cast that includes Lea Russell as Sylvia, Dinah Watts as Kate, Andrew Batten as Greg, Douglas Tindal as Tom [a fellow dog-owner], Mary Joseph as Leslie [a marriage counselor], and Kay Montgomery as Phyllis [Kate’s socialite friend].
Our fabulously creative Production Team includes Stage Manager Mary Keenan, Lighting Designer Paul Court, Sound Designer Richard Jones, Music Director Jo-Anne Wurster, Costume Designer Lindsay Code, Set Designer Samantha Brown, Movement Coach Jen Jones, Lighting Operator Gerald Croteau, Props Master Kristine MacDonald and Producer Ramona Baillie.
SYLVIA will run from November 11th to November 26th in Alumnae Theatre’s 3rd floor Studio.
DOG LOVERS, RELATIONSHIP AFICIONADOS AND COMEDY ADDICTS ARE ESPECIALLY WELCOME!
