Alumnae Theatre in Doors Open Toronto 2017

Alumnae Theatre in 2013.

In 2017, Canada celebrates its 150th birthday, and Alumnae Theatre Company turns 100 years young next February!

Come take a peek inside 70 Berkeley Street during Doors Open Toronto this weekend.

Firemen (with horse-drawn and mechanical fire engines) outside 70 Berkeley Street, circa 1915.

You’ll see photos and a video of the building throughout the years – the present configuration was constructed around 1905, as well as books about architect Ron Thom (who converted the slated-for-demolition building from a firehall to a theatre in 1971-72), and the Toronto Fire Department.

Members of Alumnae Theatre Company will be available to answer questions (ask them if they’ve had contact with our resident ghosts!) and conduct tours to the Studio.

Due to rehearsals in the space – hey, it’s a theatre!  InspiraTO Festival opens June 1 – some areas will be off limits (Main auditorium, second floor, Tech booth).  InspiraTO is also using the 3rd floor Studio, but tours will be accommodated at 2:00 and 4:00om on both Saturday and Sunday.

We encourage visitors to take photos of the architectural features of the building, but please do *not* photograph InspiraTO cast and crew.  When you post your photos on social media, we’d love it if you would tag your photos @alumnaetheatre and @Doors_OpenTO, and use the hashtag #DOT17.

Pick up a brochure of our 100th season lineup for 2017/18, and tour the building that’s been our home for 45 years.

We’re open 10am – 5pm on Saturday May 27, and 1 – 5pm on Sunday 28th.

Scripts are being read by the selection committee, and now it’s time for the New Ideas director search!  2013 will mark the Festival’s 25th anniversary, as well as the 95th birthday of Alumnae Theatre Company.

If you are a non-union Toronto-based director, we invite you to  apply to direct one of the 15 short plays (running time 10 to 45 minutes) to be produced in New Ideas Festival (NIF) 2013, our 25th annual three-week juried festival of new plays, works-in-progress, and experimental theatre to be held March 6-24, 2013.  Application deadline is Oct 27, 2012.

We provide you with:

–          Open auditions presenting a large pool of possible actors

–          Rehearsal space, performance space

–          Promotional materials and publicity

–          Limited access to Alumnae Theatre’s wardrobe, props, and sets

–          A collaborative process with the playwright to continue developing a new work with actors and, sometimes, a dramaturge

–          A safe, supportive place for directors to experiment and hone their skills

–          Production guidelines and mentorship that get all the plays & dozens of performers successfully from audition to rehearsal to stage.

Important dates:

Sat. Oct. 27, 2012:  Deadline to apply to direct one of the New Ideas Festival plays.

Sat. Nov. 17, 2012: (MANDATORY) Directors meet playwrights.

Dec. 3, 4, or 5, 2012: (MANDATORY) Selected directors attend the cold reading of their play.

The focus of the festival is script development, not production values, and thus technical requirements of the plays are kept to a minimum. NIF is an exciting opportunity to work one-on-one with a playwright to develop a
new work.

If you are interested in directing a play in the Festival, please email new.ideas.festival@gmail.com by Oct 27, 2012. Please fill in the subject line as “Director Application (your name)” and provide a directing CV or paragraph description of your experience. You will receive further details once you have submitted your application.

Alumnae Theatre Company launches celebratory season with world premiere of “February”

Lisa Moore’s stage adaptation of her much-praised novel February premieres tomorrow at Alumnae Theatre.   After the play, the writer, director, cast and crew will mingle with audience members for a season-launching gala.   Have YOU booked your ticket?

We have much to celebrate in this season of 2012/13:  kicking off with the world premiere of February (a BIG DEAL!);  marking 40 years in this building (Alumnae is one of the very few non-professional theatre companies in Toronto to have a full-time “home”); the 95th birthday of the company in February 2013; the 25th anniversary of the New Ideas Festival in March; and we close the season next April with another “first” – a new production of James Reaney’s first play The Killdeer, which had its premiere at Alumnae in 1960.

Come celebrate with us!  February runs until October 6 – details at http://alumnaetheatre.com/1213feb.html

Alumnae Theatre Company announces 2012/13 season

Amid all the recent posts about February, the call for New Ideas Festival scripts, and audition notice for The Drowning Girls, I realized that Alumnae’s full season had not yet been formally announced on this blog.  So here it is.

Alumnae Theatre Company proudly announces its 2012/13 season – we have many milestones and anniversaries to celebrate, starting Sept 21, with the  WORLD PREMIERE of Newfoundland writer Lisa Moore’s lovely time-shifting drama February, which she adapted from her acclaimed 2009 novel.   This season also includes two other Canadian works – The Drowning Girls by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson and Daniela Vlaskalic in November; and our Countdown to 100 play, James Reaney’s The Killdeer in April.  In between, there’s a classic Oscar Wilde comedy, A Woman of No Importance (January), and the 25th annual (yes – 25, can you believe it!) New Ideas Festival in March.

Alumnae Theatre Company turns 95 years young in February 2013, and this is also our 40th season in this historic former firehall.  It’s going to be a great year!
